Zero Attachment, Zero Anxiety

This is a reprint of thoughts from Martha Beck author of “Finding Your North Star” and “Steering by Starlight” and other great books on your own journey through life.  In this post she talks about how to get on a Zero Attachment, Zero Anxiety diet.  You will see how it can tie into your own Living Compass Puzzle journey.. the right way.  Enjoy.

“I have put myself on a very strict health regimen this summer. It has nothing to do with eating or exercise; it is a thought/emotion regimen, which, in the end, has many more concrete results than any physical diet one could undertake. My program is the “zero attachment, zero anxiety” diet. Mind you, shooting for no anxiety or attachment at all is extremely ambitious, and not something I would have undertaken five or even two years ago. It was only after twenty-some years of meditation and daily “mental hygiene” (noticing and dissolving all thoughts that cause suffering) that it even occurred to me to shoot for absolute clarity.
So far, I am failing abjectly.
Nevertheless, my goal has helped me see many glaring issues that before seemed so minor as to be inconsequential. The most striking thing I’ve realized is that the thought of “magnetizing,” or drawing things toward me, contains the assumption that what I want is “out there” in the world and I have to go find it. It creates a feeling of distance and inaccessibility. When I release all attachment and all anxiety, I notice that the things I want feel present and inevitable, as real as humidity in summer air.
When the temperature of a day reaches the dew point, the moisture in the air, which is invisible to the eye, suddenly appears everywhere. It was always there; it just needed a certain temperature to become visible. Similarly, everything we need to make us happy is waiting for the “temperature” of our inner life to create the dew point where it can become material form. The dew point temperature of all your desires is a feeling of normalcy. It is not high excitement, nor grasping, nor yearning. All of those emotions contain anxiety and attachment — try them right now, you’ll see.
To give you an example of what this feels like, think about the feeling you have watching a beautiful sunrise. You may experience awe and intense gratitude, but you will not be thunderstruck, amazed or hysterical. A sunrise is glorious, but it is normal. We aren’t attached to the sun continuing to shine because we are sure it will.  If you can feel that way about the arrival of your soul mate or the success of your business, my recent experience convinces me it will appear around you like dew. Everything you want is there right now, waiting to become visible.
The emotions I’ve learned to soften and dissolve during my “no anxiety, no attachment” regimen are things like intense excitement and amazement. Even amazement implies that a good thing was unexpected or incredible, not that it was normal. Try replacing amazement with awe in your own life. Replace yearning with the knowledge that what you need is inevitably yours – that you are actually pushing it away with any grasping or yearning you may feel.
I realize this is exactly the opposite of the advice I wrote down years ago in my book, The Joy Diet. This is why we must always keep up with current research. I take it back and expect that all of you will graciously forgive me for my previous oversight, because I live and work with the most incredible people in the world – which is absolutely and totally normal. “

10 year study from Harvard, your brain, and the life of your dreams

What follows is a reprint from an email we received from John Assaraf.  We could not agree more. He hits the nail on the head about how to get your life in motion toward what you really want.  Instead of just letting it happen. Or just wishing it would happen. You CAN change it by first clearly imagining it and then taking baby steps in the direction you imagine. He describes it like this:

“You may have heard about a study of alumni 10 years out of Harvard. An astonishing eighty three percent left with their degrees and had no goals at all. Fourteen percent had defined, specific objectives for themselves, but they never wrote them down. The group with goals earned an average of three times the income of the group without them. Now the blow away: The remaining three percent of graduates who had specific goals and wrote them down, earned an average of 10 times what the 83 percent group did.

It’s a story that’s been circulating in the personal development community for so long that it’s become something of an urban legend. Although I have been unable to personally verify the study, it certainly makes a point that I know is true without question. Setting goals hones our focus, gives us direction, and makes it far more likely that we’ll actually live the life of our dreams rather than just drift along on whatever whim our circumstances present.

I know it’s been one of the most powerful tools in my life…This goal-setting principle is true for all of us–not just those who go to Harvard. You have the chance right now to multiply your earning power, not to mention your ability to create anything else in your life that you desire.

Today we know that a couple of things happen when you write your goals down. When you write your goals in clear, precise terms, you activate your reticular activating system. This powerful tool filters out all the distractions and information you do want. By eliminating the unnecessary 98 percent–including all the information that tries to get your attention every moment of every day through billboards, TV, radio and the Internet–you can zero in on the important 2 percent and become absolutely mega-productive. There are opportunities around you right now to solve every challenge you have, but you may not see them until you condition your brain to look for, accept, and apply them in your life.


Your brain is connected to powerful forces you cannot see, which scientists call the quantum field. We exist in two universes, but we’re really only taught to play in one: the world we can see, hear, smell, taste and touch. As soon as you know clearly and specifically what you want to create, you start invoking the laws of quantum physics and the unseen laws of the universe.

Setting goals is not about hard work. It’s about surrendering to the universe and allowing it to bring what you want by setting up your brain and behaviors in alignment with your goals.

One great way to create your goals is to look at your life and ask: What has to happen personally and professionally for me to feel totally satisfied with my life? Divide your list into two categories, personal and professional and list as many things in each category as it will take to reach fulfillment.

Make a list. If it helps inspire you, here are some of the things on my list, things that are important to me:

* Success means being a great dad and a great partner to my wife
* Building my company with my partner
* Contributing to society
* Giving to people

Depending on the length of your list, it’s unlikely that you will be able to accomplish all of them in 12 months, so the most important thing is to take the most important things from your list and focus on those things first.

High achievers are not ten to twenty times more intelligent than other people; their power comes from the methods, resources and focus they use. By setting clear goals and writing them down, they’ve set their brains to achieve those goals. How it happens is absolutely miraculous and beautiful to observe.
